The title of this essay might seem misleading, but it depends on the way you look at it.
By numbers, this form of media is killing it. Is it talked about enough in the mainstream? Maybe. Depends on the age group you're looking at. Within which too, it's a niche.
Unfortunately, this form of media has millions of fans and yet is 'niche'.
I'm talking about anime. I was never a fan of anime and had a stereotypical view of it being a cartoon, until April. A friend flew down to Bangalore to chill for a couple of days back in March, and he happened to be a weeb. So he persuaded me into watching Attack on Titan's first episode. It felt... indifferent. It was dark lmao, which piqued my interest. When I got back home in April, I was away from work so decided to continue watching Attack on Titan.
I'm a binge-watcher. Breezed through 75 episodes, averaging 24 minutes each, which is roughly 30 hours of content in 3.5 days! And boy has my perception flipped ever since.
I won't spoil anything but Attack on Titan is supposedly the best anime of the decade and being introduced to this world with a banger, I'm hooked! I was so obsessed with Attack on Titan that my Spotify algorithm has picked it and is now messing with my blends with people 😂
I'd started working on a game based on Attack on Titan as well. But then I dropped it and joined hands with a friend who's working on a similar game...wait for it...based on an anime 😂
So in the past 2 days, I binged through 2 series of the universe with 2 seasons each, and now I'm on par with the friend when it comes to understanding the universe, just so I can perfect my craft at game design :P
Anime is much more than entertainment. Will keep that for some other day, already over the limit :P
Until next time :)
