At this point, I think all of us know how powerful cold emails can be. I'd attended tons of events in 2020 among which a few were about cold emailing. The fact that almost every successful person is just one email away, talk about accessibility! Now, sure I LEARNT a lot because of the sessions and thought I knew how to craft a good cold email but I never cold emailed anyone, mainly because I didn't see the need, until now... But lo and behold, I fucked up my first cold email. All those sessions went to waste.
Today, I emailed Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games. I received a reply, but I was embarrassed nonetheless. To be frank, I still think my articulation was okay. The problem was asking a very generic question. I wrote it intending to keep it open-ended, but that backfired. Even though he did answer it the best way he could, ie, "learning whatever field of areas excite me and learn by doing", to the generic question "Advice for a young ambitious kid" (with slightly more details). I still think I could've done better. I thought my problems and things that bother me would be too specific for someone like him. I don't know. A lesson learned I guess. Need to find a balance in the questions I ask, neither too generic nor too specific.
To end the essay on a good note, today was the FIRST TIME I stuck to my planned time blocks for the day! Yay!
Until next time :)
